#10 - Taxi Driver (1976)

“You talkin’ to me?  You talkin’ to me?” Taxi Driver features a young Robert De Niro as a mentally unstable taxi driver struggling in New York.  De Niro was so dedicated to his role that he lost 35 pounds and even obtained a taxi driver license in New York City.  De Niro, along with his co-star Jodie Foster, were nominated for Oscars for their performances.  The film was nominated for two other Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture which it lost to Rocky.  The film was highly controversial for its time due to its violence and the casting of a 12 year old foster as a prostitute.  A Martin Scorsese classic, Taxi Driver is widely considered to be one of the greatest movies of the 1970s.

#9 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

A science fiction romantic drama, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind uses unique storytelling devices to tell an equally unique story.  Featuring a-list actors Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, this film was immediately adored by critics.  Kate was nominated for an Oscar for her acting while the film took home the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.  Often found on lists pertaining to the greatest films of the 2000s, Eternal has grown a cult following of movie enthusiasts from around the globe.

#8 - Dangal (2016)

One unique aspect of the IMDb Top Rated Movies list is that it truly is an international list.  Dangal, a film from India, is the first of three Indian films that will be featured on this list.  Loosely based on a true story, it tells the story of the Phogat family, whose father had to give up his wrestling Olympic dreams but eventually trains his daughters in the sport.  Winner of many international film awards, Dangal, remains one of the best Indian films to date.

#7 - Like Stars on Earth (2007)

This 2007 family drama tells the story of Ishaan, an eight year old boy with dyslexia.  It has earned a ton of international accolades and awards and was lauded by the International Dyslexia Association.  Disney purchased the distribution rights for the film, making it the first Indian film to sell those rights to a global company.  Like Stars on Earth is full of heart and deals with a lot of real life topics.

#6 - 3 Idiots (2009)

At the time of its release, this international hit was the highest grossing Indian film of all time.  Released on Christmas Day in 2009, this comedy is frequently listed as one of the best Bollywood films of all time.  3 Idiots has won a plethora of awards internationally including many in the Best Film category.  The movie has impacted filmmaking in India as well as inspiring positive social change in the country.  American director Steven Spielberg is known to be a big fan of the film.

This 2018 animated Spider-Man film is often declared as people’s favorite Spidey film.  The Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature Film, Into the Spider-Verse provided a unique viewer experience with an innovative comic book-like presentation.  A packed soundtrack and loaded voice cast adds to the depth of this fantastic superhero film.

Django Unchained (2012)

Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 offering is still his highest grossing film at the box office.  This violent western nabbed two Oscars and was nominated for three more.  Packed full of Hollywood stars including Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson, Django Unchained will go down as one of Tarantino’s best works.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Introducing the world to a character that would star in four films, a TV series, and multiple theme park rides, this 1981 action adventure stars Harrison Ford as archaeologist Indiana Jones.  Steven Steilberg and George Lucas, coming off of their success of Jaws and Star Wars, respectively, joined forces to give the world another great franchise.  The leader of the box office in 1981, it won four of the eight Academy Awards that it was nominated for and actually won a fifth award for a Special Achievement Award for Sound Effects Editing.

#2 - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)

The 1966 Italian spaghetti western starring film legend Clint Eastwood has long been known as one of the greatest westerns of all time.  Setting it apart from the westerns preceding it, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly replaced the all good, heroic cowboy with blended, rounded, antiheroes.  That theme remains popular in movies today.  The english dubbing may distract some modern viewers, but its stylistic gunfight and innovative cinematography are still studied in film schools today.

Steven Spielberg’s 1993 biographical drama is the top movie that you can stream on Netflix.  Nominated for a whopping 12 Academy Awards and winning 7 of them, this film is featured on pretty much every critics top movies list.  Based on a true story during the Holocaust, Spielberg tackles those harrowing times in a suspenseful and dramatic fashion.  Using an unique style of cinematography and led by Hollywood stars Liam Nesson and Ralph Fiennes, Schindler’s List is a complete masterpiece that will be considered so for a long, long time.
